Light Bowgun Guide

Light Bowgun is defined by its ammunition table, magazine sizes, recoil, reload, and Rapid Fire entries. The weapon name alone does not identify its damage model; the primary ammunition must be selected first.

Scope and Weapon Model

This article assumes final-patch Iceborne. Light Bowgun's displayed Attack multiplier is 1.3, so 390 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. It is a light clutch weapon and receives the ranged-weapon physical-defense adjustment described in the combat guide. The official manual: Hunter's Notes owns controls; this reference explains ammunition, critical distance, mods, mines, and skills.

Ammunition Is the Build

For each candidate bowgun, compare whether the intended ammunition exists, its magazine, recoil, reload, movement restrictions, deviation, and Rapid Fire marker. Higher listed Attack does not repair a one-shot magazine, immobilizing reload, or severe recoil if those states reduce practical firing time.

Ammunition Is the Build
AmmunitionFinal-patch base behaviorPrimary scaling question
Normal 334 raw MV, one projectileCan the shot stay inside critical distance and hit a shot weak point?
Pierce 39 raw MV per contact, repeated along the pathDoes body length and aim produce enough contacts through useful shot hitzones?
Spread 38 raw MV across seven projectilesCan close range place the full pattern on the intended part?
Sticky 324 fixed raw plus fire and 100 stun buildupFixed explosion cannot crit or use hitzones; stun still needs the head.
Elemental ammo8 raw plus 22 element per contact for the four main elementsElement is scaled from true raw and matching element skills, then uses the exact elemental HZV.

Status ammo applies listed buildup directly rather than using the ordinary melee one-third proc rule. Level 2 status ammo generally applies more buildup but may have worse recoil, reload, or magazine on a specific weapon.

Critical Distance and Bowgun States

Normal, Pierce, Spread, and other eligible shot damage has an ammunition-specific critical distance range shown by the reticle. Being too close or too far reduces the raw component. Ballistics changes supported distance bands; it does not improve a shot HZV.

recoil controls firing recovery and whether movement is possible while firing. reload controls reload duration and movement. Deviation changes the projectile path after firing. Custom mods change these properties at weapon- and ammo-specific breakpoints, so compare the resulting state rather than merely counting mods.

Rapid Fire spends one round to emit a burst whose follow-up shots use reduced damage. It is not three full-strength copies. Burst commitment and recoil still determine when movement and the next shot become available.

Wyvernblast and Evasive Reload

Wyvernblast places a mine with five internal trigger charges and a 60-second lifetime. Explosion size depends on the strength of the attack that triggers it; one large trigger consumes more charges than a small one. Mines cannot crit and do not use shot hitzones.

The Wyvernblast Counter mod replaces the ordinary mine with a reactive version. Evasive Reload mods reload selected ammunition during the second evasive slide after a shot. If that route is interrupted or started with no legal preceding shot, the ammunition still needs an ordinary reload.

Core Offensive Priority

Core Offensive Priority
PrioritySkill or systemMechanical reason
1Recoil, reload, and magazine breakpoints for the primary ammoDetermine firing mobility, downtime, and whether the intended loop exists.
1Free Elem/Ammo Up at the level matching the ammoIncreases supported magazine sizes; value depends on the exact new capacity.
1Razor Sharp/Spare Shot or True Razor Sharp/Spare ShotGives a chance not to consume ammunition and effectively extends magazines and carried stock.
1 for direct raw ammoWeakness Exploit, affinity, Critical Boost, and the matching shot skillScale critical-distance Normal, Pierce, or Spread direct damage.
1 for StickyArtillery and raw to the Sticky capScale fixed explosions; affinity and Critical Boost do not.
1 for elemental ammoMatching element attack and appropriate elemental set bonusesScale the elemental component; exact elemental HZV and cap still apply.
1Clutch Claw Boost Lv 1Makes the light clutch attack wound in one completion.
2Special Ammo BoostRaises eligible Wyvernblast damage, not ordinary ammunition.

The matching shot skills are Normal Shots, Piercing Shots, and Spread/Power Shots. They are not interchangeable and do not raise Sticky explosions.

Defensive and Utility Priority

Defensive and Utility Priority
PrioritySkill or systemLight Bowgun interaction
1Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armorOffsets the ranged physical-defense adjustment and mistakes during firing commitment.
2Evade WindowExtends the initial roll and evasive slide invulnerability.
2Evade ExtenderChanges slide distance and the range from which the next ammo remains effective.
2Stun Resistance or matchup resistancePrevents the corresponding ranged control-loss sequence.
ConditionalSluggerRaises Sticky stun buildup, not Sticky damage; threshold timing determines its practical value.
