Heavy Bowgun Guide
Heavy Bowgun wins by choosing where to stand before it fires. From there, each opening must hold either another shot or a reload, turning that position into sustained damage. Choose a gun whose magazine, recoil, and reload suit your primary ammo, then stop firing before the monster takes the opening back.
A shield mod can guard while the weapon is drawn, but the shield is unavailable while you fire, reload, or recover from recoil. Without a shield, the same pause is your chance to roll and reposition. Wyvernheart rewards keeping a burst on one body part, while Wyvernsnipe rewards a shot that travels through as much of the monster as possible.
This guide uses Iceborne's final balance. Complete weapon controls are in the in-game Hunter's Notes; the official manual covers general controls. Combat Mechanics explains why the same attack can deal different damage. Every move is in Motion Values.
If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.
Ammo, shield, special
Normal, Pierce, Spread, Sticky, and elemental ammo create different firing ranges and rhythms. Judge a gun by the magazine size, recoil, and reload of the specific ammo level you intend to fire. The deviation stat also matters at range because its effect grows as the shot travels.
Direct ammo deals its best damage inside its critical distance band. Watch the reticle instead of assuming that one distance works for every ammo type. expands the magazine for compatible ammo, and gives each shot a chance not to consume ammo.
Shield mods guard automatically only when the weapon is drawn, you face the attack, and you are not firing, reloading, or recovering from recoil. Lower recoil shortens the time before the shield can guard again. raises the knockback thresholds at Lv 1, Lv 3, and Lv 5; Lv 2, Lv 4, and Lv 5 also reduce stamina consumption.
One shield mod has the same knockback thresholds as Sword and Shield; three have the same thresholds as Lance. A fourth does not raise those thresholds further, but it halves chip damage when a successful guard still causes it.
Special Scope adds a narrow super-critical distance band that applies about 1.30x damage to eligible direct ammo. It does not improve explosions. The magnified view narrows what you can see, so leave the scope off when that makes the monster's attacks difficult to read.
A Health Regen augment heals from a landed hit, then has a short cooldown before it can activate again. Spread pellets land together, so only the first pellet can trigger healing. Successive Pierce hits can also land during the cooldown. This makes the augment less effective per shot for those multi-hit ammo types than their hit counts suggest.
Heavy Bowgun is a heavy weapon, so one clutch weapon attack wounds the target part. It has no sharpness gauge.
Wyvernheart
Wyvernheart gains damage while consecutive shots keep striking the same body part. Use it during a long opening and aim at a broad part, so small movements do not move the burst onto another part. The shield stays down while the machine gun is firing. improves this special ammo, but not Normal ammo.
If the monster starts a turn mid-burst, cut the stream early rather than chasing the part across the body. Moving the beam onto a thicker zone resets the consecutive bonus and leaves you exposed without the shield.
Wyvernsnipe
Wyvernsnipe hits repeatedly as it travels through the monster and leaves an explosion for each hit. More projectile hits also produce stronger explosions. Fire along the body during a stable opening; a shot across only the head has less body length in which to create hits.
Line the shot from tail toward head or along the longest axis you can keep still. A glancing angle that clips one part and exits early wastes both the pierce path and the stacked explosions.
Fight loop
Begin at the critical distance for your selected ammo and aim at a favorable shot hitzone. After each shot, read the monster before firing again. A shield build waits until the recoil animation ends and the shield is ready; a shieldless build rolls or creates space when the next attack will reach the firing position. Reload only when the opening lasts long enough for that ammo's reload animation.
Use direct ammo for damage during short and medium openings. Sticky ammo can build stun when its explosion hits the head, creating a later opening rather than depending on a favorable shot hitzone. During a knockdown, use direct ammo, or commit to Wyvernheart or Wyvernsnipe when the opening and target shape suit that gun's special ammo. Craft your primary ammo from the radial menu before the magazine and reserves run out.
At the start of a hunt, clutch a non-enraged monster's head while slinger ammo is loaded. A Flinch Shot can then send it into a wall and create time to wound a target part. Against Great Jagras, use the training hunt to compare Pierce fired along the body with Spread fired from close range. The comparison makes their different positioning demands visible; it is not a claim that every body part has the same shot hitzone.
When the monster begins to stand after a knockdown, stop the long commitment early enough to restore the shield or move away. Heavy Bowgun's roll covers distance, but waiting until the incoming attack begins can still leave too little time to escape.
Skills
Build first for the ammo you can keep on target, then add damage and survival skills for the hunt. A larger theoretical multiplier does not recover time lost to recoil, a long reload, or firing from outside critical distance. Getting Started is the reference for meals, , and Armor Sphere upgrades. Combat Mechanics explains Defense, the 20-resistance threshold, , and critical distance.
Build around the primary ammo
Use the matching shot skill for a Normal, Pierce, or Spread build. The remaining choices depend on the gun, its affinity, and the target part.
| Offensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Expands the magazine for compatible ammo, reducing how often that ammo must be reloaded. | |
| Gives each shot a chance not to consume ammo, extending both the magazine and carried supply when it activates. | |
| Matching , , or | Increases the damage of the named primary ammo. Use only the skill that matches the build. |
| Lv 3 | Adds affinity on weak shot hitzones, with a further bonus when that part is wounded. It helps only when the reticle is on the qualifying part. |
| and | adds affinity. raises direct critical-hit damage, so add it only when the build has affinity to use. Affinity above 100% has no effect, and Sticky explosions cannot crit. |
| Adds attack and affinity while the monster is enraged. Clutch Claw turns and Flinch Shot use contribute to making a monster enrage. Lv 7 requires . |
There is no sharpness gauge, so does nothing for this weapon.
| Defensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Lv 3 | Adds 50 to the health cap; with the meal increase, the cap reaches 200. |
| Armor Sphere | Raises armor Defense at the smithy. Upgrade armor you expect to keep before spending decoration slots on . |
| 20 matching resistance | Prevents the matching elemental blight. Use , , , , , or only when the hunt calls for it. |
| Has a chance to reduce incoming damage. Lv 5 requires . | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents stun, avoiding a long period in which the hunter cannot guard, roll, or fire. |
In multiplayer, use Lv 1 when teammate knockbacks are interrupting your shots. It does not prevent your attacks from disrupting teammates, so keep Cluster ammo and other wide attacks away from them. The skill does not solve a teammate-interruption problem in solo play.
These skills solve specific build or matchup problems:
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Raises shield knockback thresholds at Lv 1, Lv 3, and Lv 5. Add levels when blocked attacks still cause too much knockback. | |
| Allows the shield to block certain attacks that are otherwise unblockable. It does not make the shield available during a shot. | |
| Raises Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe damage. It does not raise ordinary ammo damage. | |
| Lv 1 | Adds the slinger-ammo effect to a heavy weapon's clutch attack. Heavy Bowgun already wounds in one clutch attack. |
| Shortens the minimum distance before eligible ammo reaches maximum power. It does not change the target part's shot hitzone. | |
| Lv 4+ | Adds attack, and Lv 4 also adds 5% affinity. Fix unusable recoil or reload first because attack does not shorten either animation. |
| Adds attack only while health is full. Any unrecovered damage turns it off. | |
| Adds attack while recoverable red health remains. It has no effect after that portion of the health bar recovers. | |
| Adds affinity while stamina is full. Rolling or clutching spends stamina and suspends the condition until it returns. Lv 5 requires . | |
| Adds attack, element, and status buildup after recovery from a blight or abnormal status. | |
| Adds conditional affinity and reduces stamina depletion after its activation requirement is met. Its timing is less direct to control than aiming at a part that activates . | |
| Extends the weapon's roll. Recheck range after rolling because the added distance can leave the current critical distance band. | |
| Increases carried slinger ammo. The extra carried rounds do not increase Flinch Shot or wall-collision damage. | |
| Increases part damage, which hastens breaks but does not directly increase health damage. | |
| Adds attack and Defense after a faint. It is recovery value, not a reason to plan a faint. |
Survival and recovery
Choose from this table when a specific failure is ending the hunt. These skills trade damage slots for more reliable recovery, movement, or resistance; keep the ones that address a problem you actually encounter.
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Increases the health restored by healing effects that apply to the hunter. | |
| Shortens item-use time, reducing the opening needed to drink after sheathing. | |
| Restores the red, recoverable portion of the health bar faster. | |
| Adds Defense, but does not replace upgrading armor with Armor Sphere. | |
| Lv 3 prevents elemental blights; lower levels shorten their duration. It is an alternative when matching resistance does not reach 20. | |
| Prevents one otherwise fatal hit while health is above its activation threshold. It does not protect against the next hit. | |
| Shortens the time before mantles and other specialized tools can be used again. | |
| Reduces or prevents roars at the required level, keeping them from interrupting a shot or reload. A ready shield can guard some roars, but not while it is unavailable. | |
| Reduces fixed stamina costs, including the cost of rolling. | |
| Reduces continuous stamina drain while sprinting or remaining clutched to a monster. | |
| Gives consumed items a chance not to be expended. |
Styles
| Style | Skills |
|---|---|
| Sticky | Use to raise explosive damage; Lv 5 requires . does not improve Sticky explosions. raises stun buildup rather than damage. |
| Elemental ammo | Use the elemental attack skill that matches the loaded ammo. |
| Shield | Add shield mods and enough for the attacks you intend to block. Lower recoil lets the shield become ready sooner, but you must still stop firing before the attack arrives. |
This hunt
These skills answer particular monsters or environments rather than every hunt.
| Skill | When |
|---|---|
| Equip it when the target has an otherwise unblockable attack that you intend to guard. | |
| Equip it when you rely on Dung Pod to make an unwanted monster leave. | |
| Increases Flash Pod range; use it when the extra range solves a targeting problem. | |
| Improves evasion invulnerability and reduces stamina depletion while a blight or abnormal status is active. It does not add Attack. | |
| Lv 3 prevents Defense Down; lower levels shorten its duration. Use it only against a source of Defense Down. | |
| Prevents wind pressure from interrupting stationary firing. does not negate every wind-pressure level. | |
| Reduces or prevents tremors at the required level, avoiding an interruption while the weapon is drawn. | |
| or | While a mantle is active, grants protection from wind pressure, roars, tremors, and knockback. Only the True version grants the maximum and effects. |
| Raises barrel-bomb damage. Equip it when planned bomb damage is part of the hunt. | |
| Raises the Elderseal level of Dragon ammo against an elder dragon. | |
| Prevents environmental effluvia damage in the Rotten Vale. | |
| Increases the health restored by environmental interactables. |
Skills that look better than they are
- Special Scope does not improve explosions.
- Health Regen augment can trigger only once while grouped Spread pellets land, and later Pierce hits may land during its cooldown.
- does not improve Sticky explosions.
- A shield cannot protect you until firing, reload, and recoil recovery have ended.
- does not improve ordinary ammo.
- changes the minimum distance for maximum ammo power; it does not improve the target part's shot hitzone.
- activates after sliding, so it contributes only when the terrain and your route produce that state.
- draws more monster attention while you attack. That can make a planted firing position harder to hold, so equip it only when you intend to take that attention.
- reduces stamina depletion at 40% health or lower. It does not raise shot damage.
Settings
Arrange the ammo list so the primary ammo is easy to select, and put its crafting recipe on the radial menu. Adjust scope sensitivity until you can track the intended part; sensitivity does not change the super-critical multiplier. Set Automatic Sheathe to Manual so an item selection does not sheathe the weapon without an explicit command.
