Dual Blades Guide
Dual Blades exchange reach and guard capability for rapid severing hits, sustained element or status application, and stamina-driven movement. Their two resources are stamina in Demon Mode and the stored Demon Gauge used by Archdemon Mode.
Scope and Weapon Model
This article assumes final-patch Iceborne. The displayed Attack multiplier is 1.4, so 420 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. Dual Blades have no guard and are a light clutch weapon. The official manual: Hunter's Notes owns basic controls; this article covers modes, resource costs, attack commitment, and build interactions.
Demon and Archdemon States
Demon Mode changes the move set and movement, permits Demon Dodge and Blade Dance, and drains stamina continuously. Only attacks connected while Demon Mode is active generate Demon Gauge. Leaving the mode stops the continuous drain.
Filling the gauge enables Archdemon Mode outside Demon Mode. Archdemon Mode grants selected enhanced attacks, but those actions consume the stored gauge. It does not remove the stamina cost of re-entering Demon Mode and it is not a separate damage multiplier applied to every hit.
| Resource | Generated by | Spent by | Relevant skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stamina | Natural recovery, items, meals | Demon Mode drain, Demon Dodge, ordinary evasion | Marathon Runner, Constitution, Stamina Surge |
| Demon Gauge | Hits during Demon Mode | Archdemon attacks and natural use outside Demon Mode | Power Prolonger |
Marathon Runner reduces continuous Demon Mode drain. Constitution reduces fixed-action stamina costs such as evasion, while Stamina Surge accelerates recovery. They affect different terms of the stamina cycle.
Attack Commitment and Element
Blade Dance is a long, non-cancelable Demon Mode sequence once begun. Its many hits make affinity, sharpness, element, and status interact many times, but several Dual Blades attacks use reduced per-hit element or status multipliers. Hit count alone is therefore not a complete damage formula.
Shorter Demon and Archdemon routes retain access to directional movement and can reach a new hitzone sooner. Midair Spinning Blade Dance can track along a sufficiently long monster body and end in a finisher; the number of contacts depends on body length and path, so it has no single fixed combined MV.
Dual Blades normally favor matching element because they apply it frequently. Raw still matters to every physical hit, and poor elemental hitzones can reverse the expected matchup. Monster weakness stars do not replace the exact part and state values.
Clutch Routes and Wounding
The ordinary light-weapon clutch attack needs two completions to wound without Clutch Claw Boost. Iceborne also permits a special transition from the later roundslash sequence into a clutching spinning attack. That transition adds wound buildup before the clutch weapon attack and preserves a more continuous offensive route, but still requires the hits and attachment to complete.
Clutch Claw Boost makes one ordinary completed clutch weapon attack wound. It reduces the number of committed clutch sequences and is therefore a core general-purpose option when the Dual Blades maintain their own target part.
Core Offensive Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Mechanical reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Matching element and the corresponding element-attack skill | Frequent hits repeatedly apply the part's elemental HZV. Stop adding element at the visible cap. |
| 1 | Weakness Exploit Lv 3 and affinity to 100% | Scales raw and enables affinity-dependent sharpness effects on the intended wounded part. |
| 1 | Critical Element or True Critical Element | Allows the element component to benefit from affinity; requires the corresponding set bonus. |
| 1 | Required sharpness support | High hit count consumes sharpness rapidly and a color loss reduces both raw and element. |
| 1 | Clutch Claw Boost Lv 1 | Converts the ordinary light clutch attack into a one-completion wound. |
| 2 | Critical Boost Lv 3 | Raises critical raw damage; it does not raise elemental critical damage. |
| 2 | Agitator | Adds raw and affinity during enrage. |
Non-elemental Boost is strong per level when eligible, but an eligible non-elemental weapon gives up the elemental component that commonly defines Dual Blades matchups. Status Attack and critical-status set bonuses affect buildup thresholds rather than direct damage on every hit.
Defensive and Utility Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Dual Blades interaction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armor | General effective-health increase for a weapon with no guard. |
| 2 | Stamina Surge and sufficient stamina capacity | Restores the resource shared by movement, evasion, and Demon Mode entry cycles. |
| 2 | Evade Window | Extends ordinary and Demon Dodge invulnerability. |
| 2 | Stun Resistance or matchup resistance | Prevents the corresponding control-loss sequence. |
| 3 | Marathon Runner or Constitution | Choose according to continuous Demon Mode drain versus fixed dodge costs. |
| 3 | Evade Extender | Increases repositioning distance but can move short-range attacks past the intended part. |
Settings and Mechanical Details
- Power Prolonger extends Archdemon availability; it does not slow stamina drain in Demon Mode.
- Protective Polish, Master's Touch, and Razor Sharp/Spare Shot solve sharpness through different conditions; compare their uptime rather than stacking them automatically.
- Demon Mode ends when stamina reaches zero or the state is manually canceled. A temporary maximum stamina reduction therefore shortens the available continuous interval.
- The weapon's short reach makes camera and directional control important near narrow weak points; this is positioning, not a hidden damage modifier.
