Sword and Shield Guide
Sword and Shield combines fast severing attacks, blunt shield attacks, a weak emergency guard, and item or slinger use while drawn. Iceborne's Perfect Rush gives it a high-raw committed route without removing its element-oriented fast attacks.
Scope and Weapon Model
This article assumes the final Iceborne balance. The displayed Attack multiplier is 1.4, so 420 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. The official manual: Hunter's Notes owns the control map; this reference describes attack types, timing checks, route interactions, and skill value.
Sword hits use sever hitzones and apply weapon element or status. Shield hits use blunt hitzones, add stun and exhaust buildup, do not apply weapon element or status, and do not consume sharpness.
Backstep and Perfect Rush
Backstep is both a displacement and an invulnerable action. It can branch into a charged advancing attack, a leaping route, or Iceborne's Perfect Rush. It can also be reached after many attacks, after a roll, or from guard, making it a central transition rather than only a retreat.
Perfect Rush has three timed input windows. Successful timing changes motion values and some element, status, stun, and part modifiers; merely completing the inputs does not give those values.
| Route state | Combined raw MV | Mechanical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs not timed | 203 | Completes the route with substantially lower raw values. |
| All three inputs timed | 340 | Uses the final-patch timed values across its blunt and severing hits. |
The final hit attempts to latch onto the monster and launch the hunter away. If the latch fails, the last hit is replaced by a much weaker failed value. The route's commitment and movement therefore matter independently from its theoretical combined MV.
Clutch Claw and Wounding
Sword and Shield is a light clutch weapon. Claw Uppercut applies 50 wound buildup as it attaches. Following it with the normal clutch weapon attack completes the other 50 buildup under standard rules, producing a wound in one connected route even without Clutch Claw Boost.
Clutch Claw Boost makes the ordinary clutch weapon attack wound by itself. It remains valuable when the uppercut route is unsafe, misses its attachment, or would take longer than a direct clutch, but it does not make an already completed wound stronger.
Continuous and Committed Routes
- Sword loops can use directional Spiral Slash to turn and reset the sequence without sheathing.
- Shield attacks trade element, status, and sharpness consumption for blunt damage and stun buildup.
- Falling Bash is blunt and applies no weapon element; its landing hit has 39 raw MV under the final table.
- Slinger Burst can lead into Perfect Rush. Loaded ammunition determines whether the burst itself creates a useful flinch.
- Items can be used while drawn through the guard state. This changes access time, not item strength or the effect of Wide-Range.
Core Offensive Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Mechanical reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Weakness Exploit Lv 3, affinity to 100%, and Critical Boost Lv 3 | Scale the raw component of both continuous attacks and Perfect Rush. |
| 1 | Required sharpness support | Sword loops consume sharpness rapidly; shield hits do not. |
| 1 when eligible | Non-elemental Boost Lv 1 | Gives 1.05x base raw to a weapon with no active element. |
| 1 for elemental sets | Matching element attack and Critical Element or True Critical Element | Fast sword hits apply element often; the value depends on hitzone and route choice. |
| 1 or 2 | Clutch Claw Boost Lv 1 | Direct one-attack wounds compete with the built-in uppercut-plus-attack route. |
| 2 | Agitator | Adds raw and affinity during enrage. |
Slugger affects shield stun buildup but not severing sword attacks. It can accelerate a stun threshold; it does not increase direct blunt damage. Partbreaker similarly changes part damage before a break rather than the displayed health-damage number.
Defensive and Utility Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Sword and Shield interaction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armor | Broad survival increase for both committed and mobile routes. |
| 2 | Evade Window | Extends rolls and Backstep invulnerability. |
| 2 | Stun Resistance or matchup resistance | Prevents the corresponding loss-of-control sequence. |
| 3 | Wide-Range, Speed Eating, and Free Meal | Improve supported item effects or access; drawn item use does not amplify them by itself. |
| Conditional | Guard and Guard Up | Improve the small shield, but require substantial investment relative to its base guard strength. |
Settings and Mechanical Details
- Directional input is important for Spiral Slash and Backstep; camera-facing and character-facing input can produce different routes when the target is close.
- The guard is available quickly but has high knockback against strong attacks. Guard Slash is not a World counter and does not receive a special counter bonus.
- Airborne affects eligible aerial hits, not Falling Bash's ordinary landing damage merely because the route entered the air.
- A raw Perfect Rush set and an elemental sword-loop set value the same affinity skills but can rank element, sharpness, and opening length differently.
