Switch Axe Guide

Switch Axe alternates a mobile, long-reaching axe with a sword that spends Switch Gauge and applies the weapon's phial. Its independent offensive states are Power Axe Mode and Amped State.

Scope and Weapon Model

This article assumes final-patch Iceborne. Switch Axe's displayed Attack multiplier is 3.5, so 1050 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. It has no guard and is a heavy clutch weapon. The official manual: Hunter's Notes owns controls; this article explains gauges, phials, morph routes, discharge, and skill scaling.

Switch Gauge and Morphing

Sword attacks consume Switch Gauge. Axe mode and time outside sword restore it. Attempting to enter sword below the required threshold performs a committed reload instead of a morph. Morph attacks both change mode and move the hunter, so their value includes gauge economy, positioning, and the next legal attack rather than only their MV.

Sword attacks have built-in deflection protection, but hard hitzones still reduce damage. Axe attacks use normal deflection rules and generally offer longer reach and faster drawn movement.

Phials and Amped State

The installed phial applies only where the weapon's rules specify, chiefly sword mode. Important phial multipliers include:

Phials and Amped State
Phial typeSword-mode effect
Power1.17x total true raw.
Power Element1.45x total weapon element.
ExhaustAdds exhaust and 5 stun buildup to sword attacks; stun still requires head contact.
Paralysis, Poison, DragonApplies the listed status or dragon/elderseal behavior instead of a universal raw multiplier.

Sword hits build amp charge at rates determined by the move and phial type. At full charge, Amped State adds a 9-MV phial burst to eligible sword contacts. Each burst uses 0.35x element and status, so it is not a second full elemental hit.

Power Axe and Discharge

Completing Axe: Heavy Slam Hit 2 activates Power Axe Mode. It raises the part-damage modifiers of axe attacks by move-specific amounts. It does not multiply direct monster-health damage and it does not power sword phials; its consequences are earlier flinches, trips, and breaks when the relevant thresholds are reached.

Zero Sum Discharge latches the hunter to a monster in Amped State. Its ticks and finisher have separate values. The full finisher uses a 1.40x raw modifier and is calculated at green sharpness; early release applies an additional 0.70x raw penalty. Attachment hyper armor does not prevent damage, status, pins, or a lethal multi-hit sequence.

Iceborne also permits a special claw transition from Element Discharge into Zero Sum Discharge. It builds amp charge and changes attachment access, but still requires a valid part and sufficient state.

Core Offensive Priority

Core Offensive Priority
PrioritySkill or systemMechanical reason
1Weakness Exploit Lv 3, affinity to 100%, and Critical Boost Lv 3Scale axe, sword, and direct discharge hits on the intended wounded sever hitzone.
1 when eligibleNon-elemental Boost Lv 1Applies 1.05x to base raw with no active element.
1Required sharpness supportSword cannot bounce but still loses damage when sharpness color falls.
1 or 2Power ProlongerExtends Amped State and Power Axe Mode, reducing state-rebuild frequency.
2FocusIncreases amp generation and Switch Gauge recovery; value depends on whether it crosses a route breakpoint.
2AgitatorAdds raw and affinity during enrage.
3Clutch Claw Boost Lv 1Heavy clutch already wounds; the skill adds slinger-ammunition drops.

Power Element phials and strong elemental hitzones can move matching element and critical-element set bonuses upward. Power phials instead multiply sword raw, so the two phial models must not share an unqualified build priority.

Defensive and Utility Priority

Defensive and Utility Priority
PrioritySkill or systemSwitch Axe interaction
1Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armorBroad survival increase for a weapon with no guard.
2Evade WindowExtends hops and rolls between morph routes.
2Evade ExtenderStrongly changes sword-mode repositioning and morph spacing.
2Stun Resistance or matchup resistanceProtects long discharge and morph commitments from a later control-loss sequence.
3Tool SpecialistRaises mantle availability; it does not make attached discharge intrinsically safe.
