Lance Guide

Lance links precise severing thrusts with guarded movement and counters. Its defense is a resource system: guard strength, stamina, knockback, chip damage, and the legal response after a block all determine whether an attack was actually converted into offense.

Scope and Weapon Model

This article assumes final-patch Iceborne. Lance's displayed Attack multiplier is 2.3, so 690 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. It is a heavy clutch weapon. The official manual: Hunter's Notes owns controls; this article covers guard reactions, movement links, attack modifiers, and skills.

Lance thrusts deal severing damage and can sever tails. Most ordinary thrusts use only 0.7x weapon element and status despite applying full raw MV. High and mid thrusts therefore differ primarily in target height and route, not in physical damage type.

Three-Thrust Cycle and Movement

Mid and high thrust chains contain three attacks. The first two have raw MV 20/22 and the third has 27. A hop, Guard Dash, counter, or other legal transition resets or extends the cycle while changing position and defensive coverage.

Guard Dash moves with the shield active and can lead to a shield attack or the three-hit Leaping Thrust Hit 1 sequence. Guard Dash is not invulnerability: stamina, chip damage, guard angle, and knockback rules still apply.

Dash Attack has repeated 11-MV contacts. Reaching higher dash stages applies 1.05x and then 1.10xraw to the dash and chosen finisher. The route's value depends on travel distance and safe contacts, not only the 50-MV finishing thrust.

Guard, Counter, and Power Guard

Counter-thrust prepares a guard and returns a 40-MV thrust when triggered. Strong knockback can prevent the intended response. Holding the counter enters Power Guard, which expands response directions and changes guard behavior while draining stamina continuously.

Guard changes knockback and stamina-loss thresholds; the useful level depends on the specific monster attacks being blocked. Guard Up permits guarding specified attacks that otherwise ignore ordinary guards. Neither skill makes pins, damage-over-time zones, or every scripted mechanic blockable.

Offensive Guard activates from a correctly timed guard and supplies 1.05x, 1.10x, or 1.15x attack at Lv 1 through Lv 3 for its duration. A continuously held guard does not satisfy the same timing condition merely because an attack eventually arrives.

Counter Claw and Wounding

Counter Claw catches a physical contact and transitions to a clutch attachment. The attached sequence has hyper armor, but the hunter still takes damage and status buildup. The subsequent heavy weapon attack wounds in one completion under standard rules.

Clutch Claw Boost therefore does not reduce Lance's wound count; it adds the heavy weapon's missing slinger-ammunition drop behavior. Counter Claw also cannot answer every projectile, ground effect, pin, or multi-hit sequence merely because ordinary Counter-thrust could block part of it.

Core Offensive Priority

Core Offensive Priority
PrioritySkill or systemMechanical reason
1Enough Guard for the matchupConverts important blocked attacks into small reactions that preserve counter uptime.
1Offensive Guard Lv 3A successful timed guard supplies 1.15x attack and Lance can trigger it frequently.
1Weakness Exploit Lv 3, affinity to 100%, and Critical Boost Lv 3Scale repeated precise thrusts on the intended wounded sever hitzone.
1 when eligibleNon-elemental Boost Lv 1Applies 1.05x to base raw when no element is active.
1Required sharpness supportHigh sustained hit count and guarded uptime consume sharpness over the hunt.
ConditionalGuard UpPriority 1 only when the planned guard response depends on an attack that requires it.
2AgitatorAdds raw and affinity during enrage.

Element can contribute through frequent contacts, but the common 0.7x move modifier means matching element and exact hitzones must be compared rather than assumed from attack speed alone.

Defensive and Utility Priority

Defensive and Utility Priority
PrioritySkill or systemLance interaction
1Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armorIncrease tolerance for chip damage and attacks that bypass the intended guard plan.
2Recovery Up with Health Regen augmentRaises received regeneration and can offset sustained chip; it does not reduce the hit itself.
2Stun Resistance or matchup resistanceCovers control effects that guarding or positioning did not prevent.
3Evade ExtenderIncreases hop and backstep distance; useful spacing can also move the lance tip past a close part.
3Flinch Free Lv 1Reduces common teammate interruption when guard is not active.
