Heavy Bowgun Guide
Heavy Bowgun trades mobility for larger magazines, strong ammunition profiles, optional shield mods, and one of two rechargeable special-ammo systems. Its primary ammunition and mod breakpoints define the build before generic attack skills do.
Scope and Weapon Model
This article assumes final-patch Iceborne. Heavy Bowgun's displayed Attack multiplier is 1.5, so 450 displayed Attack represents 300 true raw. It is a heavy clutch weapon and receives the ranged physical- defense adjustment. The official manual: Hunter's Notesowns controls; this article covers ammo states, shields, scope, special ammo, and skills.
Ammunition and Critical Distance
Each Heavy Bowgun has its own ammo compatibility, magazines, recoil, reload, deviation, and special ammo. Normal, Pierce, and Spread direct damage requires both a useful shot HZV and the ammo's critical distance.
| Ammunition | Final-patch base behavior | Skill model |
|---|---|---|
| Normal 3 | One 34-MV projectile | Affinity, Critical Boost, Normal Shots, raw, shot HZV. |
| Pierce 3 | 9 MV per path contact | Affinity, Piercing Shots, body length, path through shot HZVs. |
| Spread 3 | Seven 8-MV projectiles | Affinity, Spread/Power Shots, close-range pattern placement. |
| Sticky 3 | 24 fixed raw, fire, and 100 stun buildup | Artillery and raw to its cap; cannot crit and ignores hitzones. |
| Elemental ammo | 8 raw plus 22 element per contact for the four main elements | True raw, matching element skills, repeated contacts, elemental HZV. |
recoil and reload determine movement and downtime. Custom mods should be evaluated by the breakpoint they reach for the primary ammunition. A mod that changes no relevant final state has no hidden damage value.
Shield and Special Scope
One or more shield mods allow automatic guarding while the weapon is drawn, facing the attack, and not firing, reloading, or locked in another incompatible animation. More shield mods raise shield strength. Guard changes the resulting reactions and Guard Up permits specified normally unblockable attacks; neither protects outside the facing arc.
The Special Scope mod creates a narrow super-critical range that applies approximately 1.30x to eligible direct ammunition while the target remains in that band. It does not make fixed explosions critical and its magnification, aiming time, and exact-distance requirement are part of the cost.
Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe
Wyvernheart loads up to 50 rounds and recharges over time. Sustained hits build a per-burst damage count; misses reduce it and interrupting fire resets it. Its listed 9 MV therefore gains additional raw as the burst remains on target.
Wyvernsnipe sends a piercing projectile that plants up to seven explosions. Early explosions are small and later ones larger; body length and line determine the actual count. One charge takes roughly 80 seconds to recover.
Special Ammo Boost raises eligible special-ammo damage only. It does not raise Normal, Pierce, Spread, Sticky, or elemental ammunition.
Core Offensive Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Mechanical reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Primary-ammo recoil, reload, and magazine breakpoints | Define firing mobility and sustained output. |
| 1 | Matching Free Elem/Ammo Up and Spare Shot effect | Increase effective magazine size and ammunition economy. |
| 1 for direct raw ammo | Weakness Exploit, affinity, Critical Boost, and matching shot skill | Scale eligible direct hits inside critical distance. |
| 1 for Sticky | Artillery and raw to the Sticky cap | Scale fixed explosions; affinity has no effect. |
| 1 for elemental | Matching element attack and appropriate elemental set bonus | Scale element; exact HZV and cap remain decisive. |
| 1 or 2 | Close Range, Ranged Attack, or Special Scope mods | Apply only under their distance and ammo conditions; compare against recoil, reload, shield, and deviation needs. |
| 2 | Special Ammo Boost | Raises the selected rechargeable special ammo. |
| 3 | Clutch Claw Boost Lv 1 | Heavy clutch already wounds; the skill adds slinger-ammunition drops. |
Defensive and Utility Priority
| Priority | Skill or system | Heavy Bowgun interaction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Health Boost Lv 3 and upgraded armor | Offsets ranged physical-defense risk during long firing or reload animations. |
| 1 or 2 for shield builds | Enough Guard and shield mods | Reaches the intended knockback and chip thresholds. |
| Conditional | Guard Up | Enables planned guards of specified attacks only. |
| 2 | Stun Resistance or matchup resistance | Prevents a control-loss sequence after an unguarded hit. |
| 3 | Evade Extender | Heavy Bowgun's long roll can reposition across ammo distance bands. |
Settings and Mechanical Details
- A shield cannot guard during firing recoil or reload. Lowering recoil or changing reload can therefore alter defensive availability.
- Scope and camera sensitivity should permit exact part tracking; settings do not change the numeric super-critical band.
- Ammo crafting near the carry cap can waste rounds when a recipe creates more than the remaining space.
- Cluster trajectories and large firing arcs can displace teammates; direct damage value does not include that multiplayer cost.
